Kick-off of Operation Lifesaver’s year-long 50th anniversary celebration

Operation Lifesaver, the non-profit rail safety education and awareness organisation dedicated to reducing collisions, fatalities and injuries at level crossings and preventing trespassing on or near rail tracks, will celebrate its 50th anniversary throughout 2022.

Since 1972, Operation Lifesaver’s mission has been to empower the public to make safe choices when driving or walking near tracks and trains. Over the past five decades, Operation Lifesaver and its safety partners have helped reduce level crossing incidents by 84 per cent. But there is more work to do – every three hours in the U.S., a person or vehicle is hit by a train.

Across the U.S., state Operation Lifesaver programmes and the national Operation Lifesaver, Inc. office will celebrate the milestone with a 50th anniversary logo, social media messaging, a 50th anniversary website landing page and monthly online rail safety trivia games, as well as a focus on Operation Lifesaver’s dedicated authorised volunteers, or OLAVs, who provide free rail safety presentations nationwide.

A specially-painted Amtrak P-42 diesel locomotive, emblazoned on both sides with the message, “See Tracks? Think Train!” was released into service today during a special ceremony at Washington Union Station. The black-and-yellow locomotive commemorates the 50th anniversary of Operation Lifesaver. Amtrak is one of several partners of Operation Lifesaver, which uses the “3 Es – Education, Engineering and Enforcement” to spread its message.
