On 10 July 2025, MultiModX, a research project funded by the Single European Sky ATM Research 3 Joint Undertaking (SESAR 3 JU) and the European Union, took centre stage at one of the world’s leading forums on high-speed rail development and innovation – the 12th UIC World Congress on High-Speed Rail in Beijing, China.

Luis Delgado, researcher at the University of Westminster and MultiModX representative, unveiled a set of open-source tools designed to improve air-rail intermodality. Highlights from his presentation include the multimodal journey evaluator and the intermodal performance framework, both of which are part of one of MultiModX’s three key solutions. These tools allow users to compare itineraries involving air and rail transport, taking into account total door-to-door travel time, cost, and environmental impact.

Beyond empowering travellers, these tools also enable transport operators and planners to perform network-level assessments and real-time scenario simulations in order to test the efficiency and resilience of multimodal systems.

The presentation took place during the recent UIC congress, organised in collaboration with China Railway (CR), which gathered more than 2000 participants from over 60 countries, including technical experts, government officials, transport operators, and industry leaders. The event is held every two to three years and provides a global platform for sharing knowledge and promoting best practices for high-speed and sustainable rail systems.

Through this initiative, MultiModX reinforces its commitment to enabling smarter travel decisions, streamlining intermodal integration, promoting a modal shift to rail, and shaping a more connected and sustainable European mobility network.
