Around the world, regardless of country or culture, the rail industry faces shared challenges at level crossings and along railway lines.
The majority of collisions occur when individuals deliberately take risks or make poor decisions, often driven by oversight, habit or simply being distracted. Therefore, reducing these incidents requires a comprehensive approach.
Trespass events on or near railway tracks affect the entire rail industry, with a negative impact on safety, performance, reputation, costs, and efficiency. The issue also affects society as a whole and is therefore something that we must tackle together.
Trespass Awareness Day (TRESPAD) is UIC’s second global initiative to raise awareness of the risks at and around railway tracks and premises to prevent accidents, incidents, and casualties.
By raising awareness, educating the public, and working closely with partners across multiple sectors, TRESPAD and International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD) are committed to reducing incidents and ultimately saving lives.
This year’s TRESPAD and ILCAD slogan: “Alert today, safe tomorrow”, perfectly captures this drive. The campaign aims to help level crossing users better understand the risks they face and to encourage safer, more responsible behaviour.
The 2026 campaign includes:
- A new video compilation, featuring CCTV footage from several countries, highlighting common instances of level crossing misuse.
- A series of posters developed by UIC, demonstrating how to cross level crossings safely.
