Across the globe, regardless of country or culture, the rail industry faces common challenges at level crossings and along railway tracks.
The vast majority of collisions occur because individuals take deliberate risks or make poor decisions, often due to distraction, habit, or simple oversight.
To address these dangers, risk assessments, as well technical solutions and innovation are used to improve the most dangerous level crossings.
Alongside these measures, education and awareness initiatives play a crucial role in promoting safe behaviour and, if necessary, enforcement measures may also be taken to counter inappropriate conduct near tracks and crossings.
By raising awareness, educating the public, and working in collaboration with various sectors, ILCAD and TRESPAD are striving to reduce the number of incidents and save lives.
This year, particular emphasis is being placed on the theme: “Helping people make good decisions”. The 2025 ILCAD slogan, “Safe decisions – every time,” reinforces this message. The aim of the ILCAD campaign is to make level crossing users more aware of the risks they may encounter and to encourage safe, responsible behaviour.
As part of the campaign, a video compilation featuring CCTV footage from various countries highlights the misuse of level crossings. In addition to this, UIC has also designed a series of posters illustrating how to cross level crossings safely.
