AI scalability, explainability, and transferability workshop held in Lisbon

On 21 and 22 January 2026, a workshop on Artificial Intelligence took place in Lisbon, Portugal, hosted by Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP), the national infrastructure manager.

The workshop brought together members of the global Opt-in project P905 on AI projects: scalability, explainability and transferability (AIST). Participating members included the Spanish Railway Infrastructure Manager (ADIF), IP, Irish Rail (IR), Italian State Railways (FS), Italian Railway Network (RFI), German Railways (DB), Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), and Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB). In addition, Network Rail and BaneNOR joined the project in January 2026.

The event provided a platform to share experiences, strategies, and the practical applications of AI within the rail sector. Key topics on the agenda included:

  • AI strategies
  • Maintenance strategies and the role of AI
  • AI in Asset Management and value optimisation through business cases
  • Accident prediction using satellite data and AI
  • Demonstrations of projects implementing AI solutions
